Joannes Theodorus Beelen (1807-1884) was Chamberlain
to Pope Pius IX, a Theologian, a canon and a professor in
the Catholic University College of Leuven. He took the initiative,
with other language scientists, to produce a new Bible translation.
This translation, in two parts, has received many honours.
The first part, the four gospels, was published around 1860.
