Author: Hugh Broughton
Hugh Broughton (1549 - August 4, 1612) was an English
scholar and theologian. He was educated by Bernard Gilpin
at Houghton-le-Spring. He was sent to the University of Cambridge
where he became a fellow of St John's College and then of
Christ's College. Later he went from Cambridge to London,
where his eloquence gained him many and powerful friends.
He also did not stay here. In 1589 he moved to Germany. It
is known that he there had many discussions with Jews and
Catholics. He returned back to England in 1591. Soon confrontated
with hostility because of his Puritan leanings he once more
went abroad. On the accession of James he returned to England;
but not being engaged to co-operate in the new translation
of the Bible, he retired to Middleburg in Holland, where he
preached to the English congregation. In 1611 he returned
to England. He died on August 4, 1612.
