Sylvanus Urban was the pen name of Edward Cave. He was
a printer, editor and publisher. He was also the first person
to use the word ‘magazine’. The Gentleman's Magazine,
which he created, became the most influential and most imitated
periodical of its time.

The Gentleman's magazine was an English magazine published
from 1731 up to 1914. The original title was ‘The Gentleman's
journal: or, Trader's monthly intelligencer’. The aim
was to publish comments concerning many divergent subjects
in addition to news items.
