LUCTOR ET EMERGO
"I struggle and overcome"

The oldest image of the coat of arms of a Zealand weapon can be found as an edge decoration on a manuscript from 1450. The manuscript has been made for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (and Earl of Zealand). The motto 'Luctor et emergo' descends from 1586 and occurs on the farthing with the coat of arms of Zealand. The rebellious district Zealand expressed its joy concerning the Treaty of Nonesuch, in which Queen Elizabeth I of England promised to support the insurrection against Philip II. The full motto is: 'Autore Deo, favente regina, luctor et emergo'.

Holding Ostend was for the State-General and van Oldenbarnevelt very important. The expedition of 1600, resulting in the Battle of Nieuwpoort, had as its purpose the conquest of Ostende. This expedition did not succeed. Because of its location on the coast, Ostende could hold out for years. Nevertheless the city was always threatened by Spanish troops on the land side. Maurice came to the conclusion that the protection of Oostende was risky, so in 1604 he chose to hold the siege of Sluis.

On this coin, God's name is written in Latin.

Farthing from Dordrecht, remembering the Treaty of Dordrecht.

After some time the State-General found it very difficult to maintain its strong position. After Maurits was thrown back in IJssel (1602), the Spanish side had used up their funds. From this position Philip had to accept peace negotiations. In 1609 the 'Twelve Year Truce"finally began. In 1621 war started again.

The power of the Netherlands is symbolised by seven arrows (the seven Netherlands) pointing down. In Roman times arrows were worn point down in peace time; upwards in war time. The "S. C". is another cross - reference to the Romans.

The message is: "we are strong by united powers, willing to accept peace, but ready for war".
The Spaniards were distrusted. The symbolic meaning is "distrust the enemy, trust God".

RELIGIONE ASSERTA 1619
“Defending religion”

The Synod of Dort was set up by the Dutch Reformed Church, to resolve serious disputes caused by followers of Arminianism. Remonstrants had produced a publication, in 1610, outlining the teachings of James Arminius. The main objective of the Synod was a rule between Remonstrants and opponents of the Remonstrants. The first meeting was on November 13, 1618. The President of the Council, Reverend John Bogerman of Leeuwarden, was an opponent of the Remonstrants. The party of Remonstrants were summoned, not as an equal party but as defendants. They were even excluded from the deliberations of the Synod on January 14, 1619. The Synod ruled in favour of the Contra -Remonstrants. The decision of the Synod of Dort was displayed in 5 main points known as the Canons of Dort. The Canons of Dort are part of the three official declarations of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Netherlands.

The Synod of Dort also decided to translate the Bible into Dutch. The ‘Statenvertaling’ (The State Translation) was ready in 1637. Also adopted was the Canon Law of Dort, still used in many Reformed Churches.

The Synod closed on May 9, 1619, after 154 meetings. Members of Reformed Churches from eight foreign countries were present.

The main purpose of the synod was a pronouncement between the Remonstrants and non-Remonstrants.

The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry, or knighthood, originating in medieval England. The Kings of England are the sovereigns of the order. The order's emblem, depicted on insignia, is a garter with the motto Honi soit qui mal y pense (Old French: "shame upon him who thinks evil of it") in gold lettering. Members of the order wear such a garter on ceremonial occasions - the knight wore it on the left knee, the Queen on her right arm. Various legends are related concerning the origin of the Order. The most popular legend involves the Countess of Salisbury, Catherine Montacute. While she was dancing with or near King Edward, her garter is said to have slipped from her leg. When the surrounding courtiers sniggered, the king picked it up and tied it to his leg, exclaiming, "Honi soit qui mal y pense," ("Shamed be the person who thinks evil of it."), the phrase that has become the motto of the Order.

Christina was the Queen of Sweden (1632 – 1654). She succeeded her father King Gustav II Adolph who died in the Battle of Lützen (1632). She was a collector of coins and paintings, and she loved music.

Johann Baner (July 3, 1596 – May 20, 1641) made a great career in the military army. He was promoted to Colonel at the age of 25, after successfully taking part in several pitched battles. He is regarded to be the greatest general in the army of Gustav II Adolph. He was promoted to Field Marshall after the death of the King. He was the first General-Governor of the occupied Pommern.

He died of fever and illness during a military campaign of the Thirty Years' War.

Origin: Germany ca. 1700

In the year 1700, in Germany, coins (Tauftaler) were minted on the occasion of a birth or baptism in Royal Houses.
On the front is shown the baptism of Jesus, on the reverse side are Biblical texts.

Image:

Under the shining name of God, Jesus is baptised in the river Jordan. The holy spirit, in the form of a dove, is coming down on him. Above, the heavenly spoken words: "Das ist mein lieber Sohn." ("This is my beloved son"). In the middle the words: "Den solt ihr hören, sihe das ist gottes lam das der Welt Sünde tregt Joh I" ("Listen to him, he is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world - John 1"). The text beneath: "Mir gebühret alle gerechtigkeit zu erfüllen Matt." ("for thus it becometh us to fulfill all righteousness. - Mat"[3])

Text:

"Taufet sie im namen des vaters undt des sohnes undt des h. geistes Mat. 28 .19" ("baptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost Mat 28.19)"

Here is written:

"Gott vater durch die tauff - zum kinde nimt mich auf - gott sohn mit seinem blut - macht mich gerecht und gut - gott h.geist zeucht ein - mein lehrer trost zu seyn - biss auss der eitelkeit - ich kom zur ewigkeit - Gal.3.26.27.Tit.3.5.6.7. - 1.Pet.3.2.I - R . B."

"God my father by baptism - take me to be your child - the son of God by his blood - make me just and good -h. spirit of God show yourself - to be my teacher and comfort - coming from worthlessness - I gain eternity - Gal.3.26.27.Tit.3.5.6.7. - 1.Pet.3.2.I - R . B."

The "R. B". on the reverse side are the initials from the coin master Rudolf Bornemann. He was coin master in Hannover (1673 - 1676), Zellerfeld (1676 - 1711) and Goslar (1685 - 1704).
