Samuel Johannes van den Bergh was born on January 10,
1814 in Den Haag. He was the son of a pharmacist, the pharmacy
was had been in the family for 100 years already when he was
born. At only seven years old, Samuel lost his father. His
mother, who is described as a simple but sensible woman, put
him into a boarding school. When he was 15 years old, they
decided it was time for him to prepare himself for his profession
as a pharmacist. For him to qualify he was first placed under
the care of pharmacist Kruyt. At the age of 18 he already
achieved his diploma as a pharmacist. This was exceptional,
because the minimum age was normally 20 years. Evidently,
his education at pharmacist Kruyt had another advantage, he
married Kruyt's daughter Maria Johanna Kruyt, on May 19, 1840.
Their marriage was blessed with seven children, 6 girls and
1 son. At nearly 55 years old Samuel Johannes died suddenly
on December 24, 1868 in Den Haag.
Besides his praiseworthy activity as a pharmacist and
caring for his wife and children, he also found time to publish
many poems. We found the Divine Name written in the book "Heden
en Verleden" ("Present and Past").
