City: To the north of the East coast
of Australia, in the state Queensland, is the city Cooktown,
built at the mouth of the Endeavour River. The city was founded
in 1873. It was named after the English explorer James Cook
who landed here in 1770 on his ship Endeavour. He and his
crew stayed here seven weeks. 100 years later, in 1872, William
Hann found gold in the Palmer River. There was soon a gold
rush and a city of tents was set up on the location, replaced
later by the real city.
