Tannheim - St. Nikolauskirche

City: Tannheim is a village in Tirol, Austria. It is the main centre of the 'Tannheimer Tal' (valley), irrigated by the Vils. There are about 1100 inhabitants.

Building: The local church St. Nikolaus was built between 1722 and 1724. It is built in the baroque style.

Object: The main altar was made by Silvester Wöber from Tannheim. It is on the main altar that Hebrew writing can be found.

When we look closer at the Hebrew writing then we can see that the first and the third characters (from the right side) are the same. The same applies for the second and fourth characters. What is written is not 'JHWH' but 'VHVH'. Sometimes this form was used to denote 'the Name' rather than God's name. The effect is to refer to God's name without actually saying it. Of course, it is also possible that the authors are practising some artistic license and that they did indeed intend to write God's name.
