Vienna - St. Peterskirche

City: Vienna is the capital of Austria. The city, located in the North-East of the country, lies on the river Danube. There are approximately 1.697.982 inhabitants. For many years Vienna was the Imperial capital and residence of the Habsburgers. Because of its place on the World Heritage list the historical city centre of Vienna has ensured its reputation as a cultural site. Many old beautiful buildings, castles (Palast Hofburg, Schloss Schönbrunn and Schloss Belvedere), museums, parks, statues, theatres, operas, music shows and much much more attract many tourist annually.

Building: The oldest St. Peters Church (St. Peterskirche) was built in the second half of the 4th century. A former Roman barrack was altered to become the church; the first church in Vienna. There were some major alterations in medieval times. On the initiative of Emperor Léopold I a new church was built between the years 1701 – 1733. This is the current baroque church.

Object: The impressive altar was designed by Antonio Galli-Bibiena. Centrally in the altar is placed a painting of Martino Altomonte. The painting shows a paralysed man, at the temple gateway, healed by the apostles Peter and John. On top of the altar is another painting. According the website of the church, it presents “the worship of the Divine name JAHWE”. God's name is written here as JHWH - the Tetragrammaton.

A second instance of God's name appearing in this church. The photo that was sent to us, see second band, shows the tetragrammaton.
