Antwerp - Augustinus Muziekcentrum

City: Each’ Sinjoor’ will say that Antwerp is an outstanding global city. The nickname ‘Sinjoor’ for the inhabitants of Antwerp dates back from the time of the Spanish Inquisition. It is derived from the Spanish word señor (Sir). This confirms that Antwerp's history goes back a long way. It was during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) that Antwerp was transformed from a small town to the biggest city in the Seventeen Provinces (Habsburger Netherlands). Antwerp has today 472,071 inhabitants (2008). Antwerp has a firm reputation for fashion, diamonds and as a world port.

Building: Augustinus Muziekcentrum

The AMUZ or Augustinus Muziekcentrum (translated: Augustinan Music centre) is located on the Kammenstraat of Antwerp. They use the former church St. Augustinus as a music centre . With much respect for the cultural and historical value of the church they transformed it into a modern concert hall. During the weekend of 13 - 15 January 2006 they opened the doors for the public. By presenting a wide scale of cultural diversity AMUZ want to indulge the loyal visitors of concerts, the lovers of music and the tourists of Culture visiting Antwerp.

The former Chruch was built by the Augustin monks between 1615-1618 under the guidance of Wenzel Coebergher, Royal architect of the Arch dukes Albrecht and Elisabeth. The style of the church is called early-baroque, in the outer wall you can see elements of the local renaissance style. The interior of the church is baroque.

Object: Through the southern nave, you can go to the chapel Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe, built in the year 1857. The style of the chapel is Neo-Byzantine with awe inspiring wall paintings. On the web site of AMUZ you can read that the northern apse is decorated with the image of God, seen by Daniel. Because of water damage the paintings are impaired. The Divine Name on the top round arch is written in the form of 'Jehovah'.

God's name can the second time be seen on the pulpit. The elegant pulpit made by Hendrik Verbruggen, one of the leading masters in the production of church furniture, was made in 1697. On the front the Divine Name is written in the shape of the Tetragrammaton.

The pictures are shown with the kind courtesy and cooperation of AMUZ.
