Antwerp - St. Eligiuskerk

City: Antwerp is the largest populated city in Belgium. There are approximately 472,071 inhabitants (2008). In addition to its reputation as a port, fashion centre and diamond producer Antwerp is also religious centre. The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Antwerp and the Anglican Arch Diocese of Northwest Europe. In addition 20,000 Orthodox Jews reside here. Many of them belong to the strict Orthodox Chareidi Judaism which makes Antwerp, second only to London, the largest centre of Haredi Jews in Europe. Roman Catholicism, however, holds the majority. Many churches, including the Cathedral of Our Lady, testify to this fact.

Building: St. Eligiuskerk

On December 1, 1903 the headstone of the church St. Eligius was laid. The church is built in neo-gothic style. It is a three-nave church with a tower in the western corner.

Object: Interesting in regard to the Divine Name is the rose window on the front elevation of the church.

In 2 brochures about the church the following statement is made:

"Finally the 'Royal Council of Art buildings and Nature Attractions' delivered a splendid report: ... the main altar of colleague Rooms is a nice piece of work. The window paintings are three master pieces of our colleague Ladon." (St. Eligiuskerk MCMIII - Frans Vervloet 2003).

"Window above the main entrance. Rose window. God's all seeing eye is surrounded by the 12 signs of the zodiac. Jehova with a wreath of angels." (Sint-Eligiuskerk Stuivenberg - Een parochie in de Seefhoek / Jos Loos heruitgave 2003).

As a note, the rose window of Aarlon (already on our website) was also made by the artist Gustave Ladon.
