Bruges - Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk

City: On the web site of the city of Bruges it is written: "anyone who visits Bruges notices immediately that this city has always carefully taken care of its ancient architectural and artistic treasures. But what characterizes Bruges is how it is dealing with its history in modern times." Bruges was named European capital city of culture in 2002.

Bruges today is one of the foremost cities visited annually by large numbers of international tourists.

Building: Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-kerk

The building of the church started in the 13th century. The front and western outer wall are made the Gothic style of the Schelde. The church is well known because Mary of Bourgogne is buried here. During an archaeological examination, in 1979, her mortal remains were identified. As regards her father, Charles the Bold, only his mausoleum is here. His remains were brought to Brugge by Charles V, grandson of Mary but most likely he was buried in St. Donaas Cathedral, which no longer exists. His remains were never found. The mausoleums are placed in the choir of the church.
