Ghent - St. Niklaaskerk

City: The city of Ghent is a city with a rich historical past. It was here that Emperor Charles V was born in 1500 in the Prinsenhof ("The Court of the Prince"). An interesting side note is that the nickname of the people from Ghent are 'stroppendragers " or noose-bearers. In 1540, the city refused to pay taxes to Mary of Hungary in support of Charles’ wars. The accompanying uprising was brutally crushed. The City Magistrates had to ask for pardon while wearing a noose. Hence their nickname.

Thanks to its rich historic past, Ghent is today a beautiful historic centre to admire.

Building: St. Niklaaskerk

The church of St. Niklaas can be seen on the Korenmarkt in Gent. This is the third church to be built on the same place. In the 13th century the city counsel granted the tower of the church the rank of belfry so they could pay for the building of the church. (possibly you mean 'could pay for the renovations of the church'.

Object: God's name can be seen on top of an altar.
