City: Ghent is a city in the Belgian
province of East Flanders. Ghent lies geographically at the
point where the rivers the Scheldt and Leie meet. By the time
of the Celtic era people were already settled here. After
the year 1000 Ghent was for several hundred years the largest
city of the Benelux countries (Belgium-The Netherlands-Luxemburg).
There are still many beautiful things to be seen in Ghent.
The flavour of Ghent through the centuries is that Ghent is
a city with a love for freedom and if necessary it can be
a rebellious city. The citizens have often fought against
monarchs to preserve their privileges.
Today there are 236,629 people living in Ghent (2008).
