Mol-Donk - St. Antoniuskerk

City: Mol is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp. After Antwerp itself it is the largest municipality of the province. Today Mol is loved as a popular recreation area, especially for the beautiful lakes surrounded by forests.

Mol covers an extensive area; outside of Mol-Centre there are 11 hamlets including Donk. The word Donk means 'coming up from a marsh'. The cosy workers' dwellings along the Emil Bequartlaan underline the nature of Donk as an industrial district. The industries of Donk in the past were: white sand mines, a concrete factory (1911), a bottle factory (1922), the production of asbestos (1928) and the power station with its typical cooling tower (1929). After the war came the Study Centre for Nuclear Energy (SCK), commonly known as "the atom". With the arrival of other nuclear companies SCK has now made its mark on Donk (source www.gemeentemol.be).

Building: St. Antoniuskerk

The church is regarded to be ‘young’; a witness for this is the neo-Roman style. Inside the church are statues, amongst them statues of the Antwerp sculptor Rik Sauter and his family.

Object: There is also a model of the Ark of the Covenant, on the right side. On this ark God's name is written in Hebrew. The full text on the ark reads: 'Holiness belongs to JHWH’.
