Building: Our Lady Ascension church (Abbey church)

On April 27, 1727 this church was inaugurated by the archbishop of Mechelen as an abbey church of the Ninove premonstrant community. The first church built on this place, in 1154, was a Romanesque church that was heavily damaged in the years 1578-1580. In 1623 the ruins were demolished and the first stone for a new baroque church was laid in 1640. Because of financial problems the construction not completed until 1727.

Object: In the church is a reliquary of Saint Cornelius and Saint Cyprianus. The reliquary is dated 1643-1644. It is made from an oak cabinet with copper inlaids onto which silver plates are attached. On the first band of images a reliquary is shown along both sides. The reliquary is constructed in the form of a sarcophagus. On two little pedestals is a bust with a reliquary box, one is representing Cornelius, the other Cyprianus. The whole of the structure is crowned by a reliquary horn. On one of the sides God’s name is clearly visible in Hebrew.

In the church there is also a painting depicting a high priest. We know from Bible scripture that on his head gear was the text: “Holiness belongs to JHWH” (Exodus 28:36). Some artistic freedom has been used.
