Country: The Dominican
Republic is a country in the Caribbean. It lies on the island
of Hispanolia which it shares with Haiti to the West. The
Dominican Republic is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean in
the North and the Caribbean Sea in the South. The original
inhabitants of this island are the Taíno Indians. When
Christopher Columbus landed in 1492 he was accompanied by
Spaniards who stayed in the country. Later African slaves
arrived. According to the World Factbook 73% of the Dominicans
are a mix of African, European and American Indian ancestors.
Today 9.650.054 people live here (2009).
