Kempele - Wooden Church

City: "it is a good idea to grow up in Kempele"- proclaims the Internet site of this place. Reference is made to the many young families who come to live here and to the quality of education that is provided. It also pointed out that in terms of culture, art, theatre, concerts to a flower festival, there is a lot to offer. The Kempele municipality is situated in the Northern Ostrobothnia region of Finland (Finnish: Pohjois-Pohjanmaa). This municipality is located in the Midwest of the country, just to the South of the city of Oulu. The municipality has 15,235 inhabitants (2008).

 

Building: in the community there is one of the oldest wooden churches in Finland. This old wooden church was built in the year 1688-1691.


Object: In the years following the construction of the church many paintings by the artist Mikael Toppelius were added. He was known mainly by his works of art in churches. This artist lived from 1734 to 1821. On the ceiling he has painted the Tetragrammaton. There are in the same church other paintings from the same artist. We show them to give a complete picture.
