Antibes - église de l'Immaculée Conception

City: Antibes is a city in the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. It is located on the Mediterranean Sea about 12 km east of Cannes. The history of this place goes back a long way. The Greeks came here in the 5th century BC and established a trading post here. The settlement was then called Antipolis. The city was further extended two centuries later by the Romans. In 5th century the city was almost levelled completely by the Barbarians. Also Moorish pirates looted the rebuilt city repeatedly. This was during the 8th and 9th centuries. After this time the Kings of France fortified the city.

Building: the first church built here was established in the fifth century, at the foot of a Roman fort. This was probably at the same place where a previous sanctuary dedicated to Diana, the goddess of hunting, existed. In the 6th century the Church was replaced by another church. After the destruction of the church in 1124 it was rebuilt in the 13th century. The style in which it was built then was Roman. The church served as a cathedral until the year 1244.

Many renovations followed. The current façade, in Italian style, dates back to 1848.

Object: God’s name can be seen in the already mentioned façade. God's name can be seen on the top, inside a triangle surrounded by radiating clouds.
