Cannes - Notre Dame de l’Esperance

City: Cannes is a city, on the Côte d'Azur or French Riviera (Mediterranean Sea), in southern France. There was a settlement there in the 2nd century, called Aegitna. The name was changed in the 10th century to Canua. Today the city is known for developments in the field of Hi-Technology and, of course, because of the annual film festival held there. Cannes has around 70,000 inhabitants.

 

Building: The old part of Cannes lies on the slopes of Mont Chevalier. This is also where the church Notre Dame the l'Esperance is situated. The church was built in 1627, in late-Gothic style. Characteristic of this church is the square tower, seperated from the building.

Object: God's name is seen here, under a painting, on a gilded door. Also on the altar in a radiating triangle. Here are characters which look like the Tetragrammaton, but on inspection we find that this is not actually the Tetragrammaton at all…
