City: in the North of the Normandy lies
Eu, a municipality in the French Department of Seine-Maritime
(arrondissement of Dieppe). The name of this municipality
comes from the river on which it lies. The name of the River
is now Bresle, but in the middle ages it was known as Ou,
from which the name Eu came.
EU is associated with quite a few historical events.
For example :- William, Duke of Normandy (later William de
Conqueror, King of England) married Mathilde, the daughter
of the Count of Flandres here in 1040. Laurence O'Toole, the
Archbishop of Dublin and Papal legate fell ill here on route
to King Henry II of England and died. This was in 1180. King
Richard I of England, known as Richard Lion heart, ordered
city walls to be built here in the 12th century. Joanne of
Arc passed by here as a prisoner of England in 1430.
The more than 8,000 inhabitants are called Eudois.
