Eu - église Notre-Dame-et-St.-Laurent

City: in the North of the Normandy lies Eu, a municipality in the French Department of Seine-Maritime (arrondissement of Dieppe). The name of this municipality comes from the river on which it lies. The name of the River is now Bresle, but in the middle ages it was known as Ou, from which the name Eu came.

EU is associated with quite a few historical events. For example :- William, Duke of Normandy (later William de Conqueror, King of England) married Mathilde, the daughter of the Count of Flandres here in 1040. Laurence O'Toole, the Archbishop of Dublin and Papal legate fell ill here on route to King Henry II of England and died. This was in 1180. King Richard I of England, known as Richard Lion heart, ordered city walls to be built here in the 12th century. Joanne of Arc passed by here as a prisoner of England in 1430.

The more than 8,000 inhabitants are called Eudois.

Building: The gothic church Notre Dame-et-St. Laurent is seen as a master piece of the style of pointed arch, from the 13th century. The church was built between 1186 and 1240. Originally the church was part of a monastery. The monastery was demolished during the French Revolution. The church is consecrated to Mary and Saint Laurence O'Toole, Archbishop of Dublin and Papal Lagate of Ireland. His bones are still preserved in the church in a silver reliquary and sarcophagus above the main altar.

Object: In the church is a painting representing the baptism of Jesus. Above Jesus and a dove (the Holy spirit) is a triangle with the Tetragrammaton. In addition there is in the Church three further times a triangle, maybe with the intention of depicting God's name but this can no longer be seen.
