City: Evreux is a city in the north
of France located on the river Iton , situated 95 kilometres
northwest of Paris. The region is Upper Normandy.
This region was known to be inhabited in Gallo–Roman
times. In the 1st century this place became the capital of
the Eburovices, a Gaullic tribe. The current name Evreux derives
from this tribe. As with so many French cities this city suffered
a series of sieges, fires and lootings. After every devastation
the city was bravely rebuilt. Also during the Second World
War there were heavy bombardments here.
Today 53,254 people (2008) live in Evreux .
Bldg.: Cathedral Notre Dame
One of the most remarkable buildings in Evreux is the
cathedral. This church belongs to the Roman Catholic Church.
Already by the 10th century there was a cathedral here.
The church however went up in flames and was rebuilt in the
12th century. During the fights between Richard the Lionheart
Philip II of France there was again a large fire. Again there
was a major reconstruction . This occurred several times between
the 12th century and 20th century. This explains why the current
building has several architectural styles: the ship??? is
Romanesque, the West façade is built in the Renaissance
style and there are several other styles from in between these
periods represented.
God’s name: to the right of the
church, in a niche, is a painting with the divine name on
top in a triangle.
