Guebwiller - Notre Dame

City: the city that we are highlighting here, Guebwiller, is situated in the North-East of France, in the Alsace area. The earliest that this place was mentioned in a document was in 774. In that document a certain Willarius is shown making a donation to the Abbey of Murbach. In this document Guebwiller is referred to in the primitive form 'villa Gubinvillare'. It developed into a city around the 12th century. The city walls were built between 1270 and 1287.

The city is situated at the foot of the Vosges mountains. It is located between the vineyards and wooded slopes at the entrance of the Vallée du Florival (Valley of flowers). The 11980 inhabitants are called les Guebwillerois and Les Guebwilleroises.

Building: Notre-Dame.

The imperial abbey of Murbach moved to its permanent position in Guebwiller in 1759. The Prince-Abbot immediately ordered that a new church be built. This church, Notre Dame, was built between 1762 to 1785 from the plans of the architect Louis Beuqeu. In 1768 Louis Beuque was replaced by the Austrian architect Gabriel-Ignace Ritter. The church is the largest building in the style of classicism in the Alsace region.

Object: the divine name is located in the window above the altar. The name is written with the Hebrew letters JHWH.
