Building: In 1858, a 14-year
old girl called Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have experienced
a series of visions of the 'Virgin Mary' in the Grotto or
Cave of Massabielle. In 1864 a statue was made and placed
on the site. A chapel, which is now known as the Crypt, was
also built there. After a short while the chapel became too
small to accommodate all the visitors. Now there are three
basilicas: the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the
Rosary Basilica and the basilica of St. Pius X, and several
other buildings.
