Lourdes - basilique Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire de Lourdes

City: Lourdes is a town and community situated in the south-west of France, in the region of Midi-Pyrénées. The town is most commonly known as a place of mass pilgrimage. Between 4 - 6 million visitors visit Lourdes every year.

Building: In 1858, a 14-year old girl called Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have experienced a series of visions of the 'Virgin Mary' in the Grotto or Cave of Massabielle. In 1864 a statue was made and placed on the site. A chapel, which is now known as the Crypt, was also built there. After a short while the chapel became too small to accommodate all the visitors. Now there are three basilicas: the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Rosary Basilica and the basilica of St. Pius X, and several other buildings.

Object: Around the central dome of the Rosary Basilica are some impressive mosaic images. The Transept on the left contains depictions of the childhood events of Jesus. Behind the Sanctuary, five altars show the events linked with the Passion of Jesus. Finally, on the right Transept are altars depicting the events linked with the Resurrection of Christ.

In the mosaic image depicting "the lashing", God's name is shown at the top.
