Marseille-Montredon - église Sainte-Eusébie

City: Marseille is the oldest city in France. The city, located on the Mediterranean Sea, was founded by the Greeks in the sixth century BC under the name Massalia or Massilia. This was an excellent place for trade between the Greeks and the Celts. In the course of time Marseille was conquered by different peoples: the Romans, Visigoths, Burgundies and the Franks. In addition the city was attacked by Muslim pirates in the 7th century.

Today Marseille is a multicultural city with as many as 852,395 inhabitants (2007). In the suburbs of Marseille there are at least 1,623,720 people.

Montredon is a ‘quartier' or town district in the south of Marseille, on the coastline.

Building: église Sainte-Eusébie. This church was built between 1855 - 1858 in Romanesque-Byzantine style according to the plans of architect Charles Bodin.


Object: God’s Name is present as the Tetragrammaton on the outer front elevation of the church under an arch.
