Paris - Basilique Notre-Dame-des-Victoires

City: Paris – for centuries the mere pronunciation of this name sparks the imagination. Of course because Paris is the capital of France, and has been since King Clovis I ordained it so in 506. But there is so much more to learn about Paris. Paris shines in architecture. There is for example the Eiffel tower, the more than 80 buildings that are more than 100 meters high, the Arc de Triomphe, Hôtel National des Invalides, the Élysée palace, the Palais de Chaillot, the Panthéon, the Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Versailles… too many to mention. Paris is also known as a city at the height of fashion. It has always been a centre of haute couture. Paris is also known as a city of art and culture. There is a lot of heritage to absorb, including no less than 150 museums.

With 2,193,030 inhabitants (2007) - if one includes the suburbs this increases to 11,769,433 people – this city is one of the largest cities of Europe.

Building: The church Notre-Dame-des-Victoires is a basilica of the Catholic Church. When the church was first built it belonged to a convent of the Augustinians. The first stone was laid by King Louis XIII on December 9, 1629. He gave it that name as he believed the Virgin Mary had helped him with certain victories.

During the French revolution the church and the convent was looted. The church was at that time even used as an market! After the revolution the church was again taken in to religious use and became a basilica in 1927.

Object: Here God's name is seen clearly above the entrance door. On the first band of images we are showing two angles of the church. The second band of images shows the tetragrammaton.
