Ramatuelle - église Notre Dame de l’Assomption

City: Ramatuelle is a French municipality in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. This medieval and picturesque town is located about 10 km south of Saint-Tropez. The town is built on the flank of a hill order to be protected against approaching enemies. The view of Ramatuelle is dominated by little twisted streets and ochre colored houses decorated with geraniums, jasmines and honeysuckles.

There are now 2500 inhabitants living in Ramatuelle.

Building: The parish church Notre Dame leans against the old wall of the village. The church was probably built in the 15th century. After the destruction of the village in 1592 the church was altered considerably. The date above the entrance door, 1620, refers to the time that the new portal was formed through the wall.

Object: The altarpiece is dedicated to the Notre Dame of Ramatuelle. At the top of the altarpiece is a triangle with Hebrew characters. Possibly it was intended originally to represent God’s name here, but on a closer inspection we can see that the same character has been written three times instead of the Tetragrammaton.
