Saint-Dié-des-Vosges - Synagoge

City: Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is one of the larger cities in the French department Vosges, northwest France. There were about 21,900 inhabitants in 2005. The city is a very well-known touristic place in the Massif of Vosges. The forests, valleys, lakes and mountains are very attractive to tourists.

Building: A previous Jewish synagogue was destroyed by fire during the Second World War. In fact the majority of the city was devastated. Rebuilding the city took quite some time. A new synagogue was built and inaugurated on September 9th, in 1963.

Object: Outside on a stone table is written the Hebrew text. At first it would appear that God's name is written on the second line. Yet, when we are look more closely, we can clearly discern that the first and third characters (from right to left) are equal in length. This is not JHWH. In this instance “the name” is written as a replacement for the Divine Name.
