Saint-Pol-de-Léon - cathédrale Saint-Paul

City: Saint-Pol-de-Léon is a village in France, in Brittany. In the Breton language it is called 'Kastell Paol'. The municipality has about 7,400 inhabitants. From very early days in history this place was inhabited. A testimony to the presence of man in those days is a well preserved dolmen. There was also a Roman military presence in the third century.

 

Building: A cathedral is the head church of diocese. It is the seat of the bishop. The diocese of Saint Pol de Léon was formed in the 6th century. The name of the cathedral refers to the first bishop, appointed by the Frankish King Childebert , Saint Paul (Pol) Aurelian (+ - 490/+ - 572). The first church at this place was destroyed by the Danes in 875. It was rebuilt in the 12th century, a base for the current Gothic building. The nave, the side walls and frontage are from the 13th and 14th century. The apse, the choir and the side chapels date from the 15th and the 16th century.
