Troyes - Hôtel-Dieu-Le-Comte

City: Troyes is the capital of the Champagne region. The city is located on the Seine in the North-East area of France.

The city was formerly the capital city of the Tricassii, a Celtic tribe. Later the Romans started to call it Augustobona Tricassium or Augustomana Tricassiorum. According to the legend, Atilla the Hun himself once stood before the gates of the city. The town was burned by the Normans in the 10th century. It was then rebuilt into a fine flourishing city.

Today approximately 61823 inhabitants (2007) live here .

Building: The literal translation of the word ‘Hôtel-Dieu’ is ‘Inn of God’. This was the name originally given to Inns used by pilgrims. Those places were generally built in the immediate vicinity of a cathedral. The purpose of the 'inn' - to accommodate pilgrims - changed in the course of centuries to the care of the elderly and infirm.

The Hôtel-Dieu-Le-Comte in Troyes was founded in the 12th century by the Earl of Champagne (le Comte de Champagne) Henri le Libéral. Since then the Hôtel Dieu has been rebuilt several times : in 1270, 1482, 1697 and in the 18th century.
