(2009) Germany is the largest country of the European Union.
The neighbouring countries of Germany are Denmark, Poland,
the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg,
Belgium and the Netherlands. German history began in the 1st
century BC, when mention was made of an area inhabited by
Germanic tribes called Germania. Present day Germany has existed
since 1871, as a Union of German Länder or States. Today,
there are 16 federal States. As regards religion 67% of Germans
claim to be believers. Nearly 31% are Catholic, almost 30,2%
are members of the Evangelical Church.
