Bordesholm - Convent Church

ity: The municipality Bordesholm is in Northern Germany. The area containing the old city and the convent church is located on the former island of Klosterinsel. We say ‘Former’ because, due to construction work and decreasing water-levels, the island is no longer actually an island. There are approximately 7,500 inhabitants here.

Building: The convent of Neumünster moved to Bordesholm in 1330. The convent existed up to 1566; then it was surrendered to the Reformation. The construction of the convent church started in 1309. The church was inaugurated in 1332.

Object: The main altar, with its Baroque upper part, was made in 1727. It was a gift of Duke Carl-Friedrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. God's name can be seen twice on this altar. The first time on the left upper part, written as ‘IEHOVAE’. It is written for the second time on top of a painting representing the baptism of Christ.
