Celle - St. Marienkirche

City: Celle is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located on the river Aller at the southern edge of the Lüneburger heathland, approximately 41 kilometres from Hanover. The city has approximately 70,745 residents

 

Building: The evangelical Stadtkirche Saint Marien is situated on the Markt (market). The construction of the church is believed to have commenced in 1292. The church was completed and inaugurated in 1308.


Object: In the church there are more than 100 paintings, presenting Biblical scenes. The paintings were mainly made between 1695 and 1698 by Konrad Schüler, Johann Brusz and Henning Fischer. He used the ‘Sternschen’ Bible of 1672 for his source information. The pictures to the southern side present scenes from the Old Testament. The pictures to the north present scenes from the New Testament. On two of these paintings God's name is written. The very first painting, and in addition the first one with God's name, is named “The Creation - Genesis 1:1”. Also the Tetragrammaton can be seen on a second painting
