Gifhorn - Sankt-Nicolaikirche

City: Gifhorn is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated near the cities of Wolfsburg, Braunschweig and Hanover. The city was mentioned for the first time on a document from 1196.

Building: In the years 1700 up to 1750 many churches were built, by the Prince-elector Hannover, as a replacement of older ruined churches. The church of Sankt-Nicolai at Gifhorn was one of these. This church was built from 1734 up to 1744. The style of the church is baroque. The altar was made in 1744. There was a thorough renovation during the years 1957 up to 1965 but carefully carried out so that the original look of the church was preserved.

Object: On the top of the main altar God's name can be seen, surrounded by three angels. In symbolic expression the angels are announcing the name of God to humanity.
