City: Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany. The city, situated on the Elbe, is seen as an autonomous federal state. The history of the city goes back to the year 825 when under Emperor Louis the Pious a castle was built. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave the city port rights in 1189. Today Hamburg is the most important port city of Germany. There are 1.780.748 inhabitants living there.

Building: The house shown below is located in the street Neanderstrasse, in Hamburg. We are showing the pictures by kind courtesy of the owner.

On the house is a memorial plate, with the following text:

This house stood (in)
Katharinenstraße 37
Built around 1730
Dedicated
Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock 2.7.1721 - 14.3.1803
Hamburg Ottensen

Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock was a very well-known German poet. He is often considered to be the greatest German poet ever. We are already showing a poem written by him on our page “poets”. Klopstock was acquainted with God's name. The entrance to this beautiful house has a special decoration on the top it.

Object: There it is written: “JEHOVA VEXILLUM MEUM”. The translation being: “Jehova is my banner”.

These words can be seen in the Bible, in Exodus 17:15. It is interesting to know that these words were the motto of Johann Georg III, Elector of Saxony from 1680 to 1691 and appointed Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire.
