Hamburg-Harburg - Altes Rathaus

City: Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany. The city, situated on the Elbe, is seen as an autonomous federal state. The history of the city goes back to the year 825 when under Emperor Louis the Pious a castle was built. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa (Red Beard) gave the city port rights in 1189. Today Hamburg is the most important port city of Germany. There are 1.780.748 inhabitants living there.

Hamburg-Harburg is a part of the city Hamburg. There are more than 200,000 inhabitants living in this quarter.

Building: The oldest 'Rathaus' (City Hall) of Harburg was built in the 2nd half of the 15th century. This building had a new façade made in 1733, embellished with the city's Coat of Arms and a plaque with text. In 1945 this building was, for the most part, destroyed during bombardments, but the porch remained intact. In 1953-55 the porch was incorporated into the new building of the Helms Museum.

The text on the plaque:

"WAS HEUTE RATH UND STADT AUF EIGNE KOSTEN BAUEN BEWAHR IEHOVAE HAND AUF WELCHE WIR VERTRAUEN"

What today the Council and the City are building at their own expense, Jehovah's hand is preserving, on which we place our trust
