City: Heidelberg is a city in Baden-Württemberg,
Germany. The city is situated on the river Neckar. The first
time the city is mentioned in official documents was in the
year 1196. From the Middle Ages up until the thirty-year's
war, Heidelberg was the residence of Count Palatine, a Prince-elector
of the Holy Roman Empire. The castle was his residence.
Building: The castle of Heidelberg is
one of the most famous ruins of Germany. After its destruction
during the War of Succession of the Palatines (1688-1697)
the castle was only partly restored. The castle, 80 meters
above the ground, dominates the city-view.
