City: Mainz is the largest city of the
German Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate. The city lies
on the left bank of the Rhine on the mouth of the River Main.
The name of this place has been changed several times throughout
history. The first permanent settlements were there at the
time of the Celts. The Romans came and they made an army camp
here, Mogontiacum. Around the army camp arose settlements
for trade, resulting in the arrival of craftsmen. The city
grew. In 782 Mainz was chosen to be the city of the Roman
Catholic Archdiocese. Today there are 197,623 people living
here .
