City: "Melsungen pays off - not
only because of the history of this timber framed built town,
but also for its unique atmosphere. Here you can relax with
culture and nature. Here you can enjoy a walk through the
romantic mediaeval streets with many shops or enjoy the quietness
of the river Fulda” - according to the official website
of the city. The term 'timber framed built' is a reference
to the beautiful homes found here constructed by means of
a special structure, a style of wood-framing with infill.
Melsungen is a city in the German state of Hesse. It
is located in an area called Fulda-Werra-Mountain land. Its
first mention was in the year 802, but there appears to have
been habitation here long before that. Today 13,427 people
live here (2009).
Building: Stadtkirche
This church is situated west of the Marktplatz (Market
Square). Evidence suggests that there was a church built here
around the year 1200, built in Romanesque style, of which
the tower still remains. The Roman Church was started to be
altered into a gothic church in 1350. The choir block was
consecrated in 1355. The church today is used by Evangelicals.
God’s name: Outside the church
there are many tombstones laid against the wall. On one of
these stones God's name can be found.
On a tablet beside the tombstone it is written that the
tombstone belongs to "Johann Helfrich Manger, Schreiber
Rent". He was born in 1661 and died in 1725. Below the
stone is written a quote from Psalm 37:5 : "Commit your
way to Jehovah. Trust also in him, and he will do this”.
