Waldeck-Netze - St. Maria und die vier Gekrönten

City: Netze is a small village which today forms a part or district of the city Waldeck. The village is situated at an altitude of 320 meters, between Korbach and Bad Willungen. Research teaches us that the village used to be a "Haufendorf". A Haufendorf is a village that was not planned and was mostly comprised of surrounding farms. The name Netze first appeared on a charter written in 1216. A certain Andreas of Netze witnessed this document. The village must certainly be much older than this. In the 7th and 8th century the Franks considered Netze to be a landmark on the borders of the southern Sachsenland (land of the Saxons).

Today there are about 643 inhabitants living in Netze. On there site there are several Fachwerkhauser, (craft houses), to see. This is something that is proudly advertised to tourists.

The town of Waldeck, of which Netze is a part, consists of 10 districts. This town is located near the beautiful Edersee, a place known by many tourists as a beautiful nature resort.

Building: St. Maria und die vier Gekrönten. The Count von Schwalenberg founded a monastery here in 1228, which was occupied by the Order of Cistercians. The original church was too small and therefore a new one was inaugurated in 1280. Throughout the centuries there have been many renovations and alterations. In 1527 the monastery was abolished during the Reformation.

The name of God: God's name is found twice. The first time is on the pulpit, Baroque style, made in 1663. God's name is to be seen above the pulpit partially covered by a dove.

The second time God’s name appears is on a cast-iron tombstone. On top of the stone is written the name John Scipio, who was pastor from 1608 and who was buried here in 1660, next to the altar. On the epitaph there are four biblical texts inscribed with the name JOVA representing God’s name.
