Worms - Synagogue

City: Worms is a town in the German Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate, situated on the Rhine. The history of the city goes so far back in time that the city competes with the cities of Trier, Augsburg and Cologne for the title "Oldest city in Germany". The city was founded by the Celts under the name of Borbetomagus (Country of the Borbet). The Romans called the city Civitas Vangionum or settlement of the Vangiones. The Vangiones were a Germanic tribe. What is interesting is that the inhabitants of Worms in the 16th century called themselves Vangiones. Worms numbers 82,040 inhabitants today(2008).

Building: The history of the synagogue is long. The oldest synagogue on this site was built in 1034. It was heavily damaged during the first and second crusades (1096 and 1146). A new synagogue was built in 1174/75. This synagogue was destroyed in 1938 and 1942. It was rebuilt between the years 1958-1961.

Object: Inside the synagogue is a plaque with a Bible text: Lamentations 5:1. In spite of the fact that in Hebrew God's name is clearly seen (the second word on the right) the German translation says 'Ewiger' or 'Eternal One'.
