Hamadan - Mausoleum Esther en Mordechai

City: Hamedan is a city situated 400 km southwest of Tehran. The city is located to the West of the country. It is a big city, numbering no less than 550,284 people (2005). The city is one of the oldest in the country. It was founded by the Medes around 1100 BC and was used as the capital of the Median Empire.

Building: In Hamadan, formerly Ecbatana, there is a Mausoleum often visited by Jewish pilgrims and tourists. The building itself is not considered to be very valuable. The construction is Islamic and consists of an entrance, a vestibule, a sanctuary and a Sha-ni-shin (also called 'Kings sitting place').

What is contained inside the Mausoleum is considered to be very valuable. After all, they claim that the graves of the Biblical queen Esther and her uncle Mordechai are there. Two exquisite wooden coffins can be seen. One of which, is of an earlier date than the other and bears an inscription in Hebrew.

Object: Here we can see that the Divine Name is written at the entrance.
