Jerusalem - City of David

City: Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The first time that the city is mentioned in the Bible it is referred to as 'Salem " meaning peace (Genesis 14: 18). Jerusalem is about 55 km inland from the Mediterranean Sea, and some 25 km to the West of the north end of the Death Sea, in the hills of the central mountain chain. (See. Psalm 125: 2.) The city lies 750 m above sea level. Throughout history, there have been many events that have taken place in this city! The city today is important for many religions. According The 2000 Statistical Yearbook of Jerusalem there are as many as 1204 synagogues, 158 churches and 73 mosques. For Jews it is the city where David lived and the site of the Temple of Solomon. For Christians it is in addition a city which had a big role in the life of Jesus. For Muslims it is the third most Holy City after Mecca and Medina. Muslims believe that the Prophet Mohammed made his Night journey to heaven from here.

In 2009 there were 763,600 people living in Jerusalem.

The area that is called "the city of David", is actually an area within the city of Jerusalem adjacent to the Western Wall.

Building: The area called 'the city of David,' is actually a region inside the city of Jerusalem, on the western wall. At the entrance, visitors are welcomed by a harp – in reference to the harp of King David. On one wall we see the words 'the song of ascents.' Notice that the superscriptions found in Psalms 120 to 124 also bear that name. In this text the Divine Name is written several times.
