The cathedral with side buildings is the most important Norman
- Arab monument in Sicily. It was first built in 1172 by King
William II of Sicily (1153-1189), called The Good, as the heart
of the royal citadel. The vast majority of the building works
were completed in 1176, although some work lasted up to the
13th century. The church was inaugurated in 1182 by a papal
bull issued by Pope Lucius III. The convent exhibits the great
artistic value of craftsmen who have hand crafted a combination
of Byzantine, Arab and Normandic works.
