Siena - Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo)

City: Siena is a city in Tuscany, Italy. It is also the capital of the province with the same name. The city is very old. In ancient times it was an Etruscan settlement and later a small Roman city. Nowadays Siena is a city of 54,000 inhabitants. It is a very well-known city visited by many tourists every year.

 

Building: The cathedral of Siena (Duomo) was built between 1215 and 1263 in the Gothic style. There have been many alterations since then. In the 14th century there was even a considerable extension. There are many art pieces to be seen inside the church, pieces by masters as Donatello, Bernini and Michelangelo.

 

Object: Painted in the dome above the altar is a triangle surrounded by angels. Inside the triangle is God’s name in the form of the Tetragrammaton - the Hebrew characters JHWH (from right to left).
