Verona - Cattedrale di Santa Maria Matricolare (duomo)

City: Verona is an Italian city in the North of Italy. After Venice, it is the largest city in the Veneto region. There are as many as 265,071 inhabitants (2008) living here. In the first century B. C. this place was already known as a Roman city. This fact is evidenced by the amphitheatre, which can accommodate 22,000 spectators, the theatre and the Torre dei Lamberti with a height of 84 metres. The amphitheatre is still used during the summer for operatic performances. For romantic souls Verona speaks to the imagination through the story of Romeo and Juliet. The house where Juliet allegedly lived is a tourist attraction. Other attractions include the medieval palaces and churches including the church that we show.

Building: this Cathedral was founded after two previous churches on the same site were destroyed in an earthquake. The construction began in 1117. The church was inaugurated on September 13, 1187. Since then, there have been some renovations, but the whole of the original construction plan remained intact. The current interior dates from the 15th century. The impressive bell tower, which was never fully finished, was built in the 16th century, designed by the Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli.

God’s name: The name of God: in a dome above a side chapel is God's name depicted in Hebrew signs.
