Stad: Luxembourg is the capital of the
Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Its history goes back to 963. In
that year a castle was built by Earl Siegfried on the Bock
Fiels ("rock"), this gradually evolved to become
the town of Luxembourg. Over the centuries, the town grew
further into a city, and in fact to be one of the strongest
fortresses in Europe. In 1867 Luxembourg was declared neutral
and the walls of the fortress were pulled down. For this reason
only 10% of the former walls can be seen today. The old city
centre and the few remaining pieces of the fortress are placed
on the World Heritage list in 1994.
Building: église St. Michel
This church goes back to the year 987. In its long history
the church suffered frequent damage and therefore it was often
rebuilt or expanded. The present Gothic style is from the
year 1519.
Object: In one of the richly decorated
windows the Divine Name is written in the form of the Tetragrammaton.
