Breskens - St. Barbarakerk

City: Officially Breskens belongs to the municipality of Sluis, situated in the Dutch province Zeeland. Breskens lies at the mouth of the Western Scheldt, where the River enters the North Sea. For many years it has been a fishing village. As a matte of fact the village was founded in 1517. The 4,787 inhabitants (2010) are called Bressiaonders ".

 

Building: St. Barbarakerk

Striking, unusual and decorated with many wooden carvings - this is how one could describe the Catholic church of St. Barbara at Breskens, inside and outside. The church is located in the Europastraat n° 7. Very striking to the eye are the images in front of the church. These images are made by the parish priest - artist Omer Gieliet. The wood for the carvings is recycled from the breakwaters of a harbour.

 

Object: On the first rafter is written: "God sprak Abram trek weg uit het land van de dood". (translated: "God said to Abram leave the land of dead. On the side we can see the consonants "JHWH".
