Dordrecht - Groothoofdspoort

City: Dordrecht is a city in the Dutch province South Holland. Most of the 118,607 inhabitants call their city Dordt. The history of the city goes back to the 12th century when the city raised at the river Thuredrith. Dordrecht was in those days called Thuredriht. The count of Holland gave the city its city rights in 1220.

And today? "Dordrecht is a beautiful city, which offers visitors a look at the history of Holland. Not only by means of the historic centre, but also with the Dutch Biesbosch. Together with the windmills of Kinderdijk and the National Dredging Museum and other sites, the region offers much for home grown and international visitors. In short: Pocket-size ' Holland ' - according the website of the city.

Building: Groothoofdspoort

The gate Groothoofds was the former entrance of the city. It is located on the eastside of the Groenmarkt. The present gate was built in 1617/1618 around the late-Gothic city gate (1440 - 1450).

On a plaque is written: "The gate is the entrance to the boat moorings, (called) head (hoofd). In 1617 a new gate was built around the old gate. On the landside we can see the coat of arms of Dordt, held by two mythical figures. On the waterside is the Virgin of Dordt pictured with, in one hand, the weapon of Dordrecht.and in her other hand a palm branch. The coat of arms around her belong to cities which are connected with Dordt in one way or another."

Object: Below the image of the Virgin is a tablet with text.

On the plaque is written:

'Pax civium et concordia tutissime urbem muniunt'
'My God Jehovah, be my guardian'

and

'Custos esto mihi Deus Jehova'
'My God Jehovah, be my guardian'
