Edam - Sint Nicolaaskerk

City: "Say tourism and, no doubt, the words Edam and Volendam will be spontaneously metioned. After all, the national costumes in Volendam and the cheese in Edam are more than world famous. Each year more than 2 million tourists from all over the world visit our municipality. "– this is how the website of Edam-Volendam opens its tourism page .

Edam is a town in the Dutch province North Holland. The oldest mention of the place is found in a document of 1310. The city received its city rights from Count William V in 1357. In the course of history Edam blossomed through its shipbuilding, herring fishing and, of course, because of the cheese. From 1975 the city was joined with Volendam.

Building: Sint Nicolaaskerk

The Grote kerk (Big church), as the St. Nicolas church is called, was built in the 15th century. In the 16th century the choir stall was replaced by the current one. In 1602 there was a big fire and the church was badly damaged. Soon restorations were made. The church received a new roof and new windows. Several Dutch cities donated stained glass windows.

Object: This window was a gift of Leiden. On both sides of the decoration is written '1608', the year of donation. On either sides a text is written.
