City: Emmen is a town and municipality in the Dutch province of Drenthe.

It is made up of one urban centre and thirteen surrounding villages, giving a total of more than 109.000 inhabitants. It consists of residential areas, mainly, in addition to natural beauty spots and forests. The lively city centre is just a stone's throw away from Saxon farms. Emmen is centrally located on the transport axis between Randstad, Ruhr area, North Germany, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. In addition to the many nature reserves, there is still plenty of land available for housing construction and branch offices. Building: Synagogue

This Jewish synagogue is located at n°29 Julianastraat . The synagogue was built in 1878. In 1909 there an extension was added on the street side, which is the reason why it has 1909 inscribed there. It is the only synagogue in Drenthe where the interior is still in its original condition.

Object: Between the two windows is a plaque. The plaque describes the dedication of the synagogue on a holy day. Above this is written what looks like the Divine Name, but notice that the fourth consonant is not equal to the second.

Inside is a representation of the two tablets Moses received. Again at first sight it would appear to contain the Tetragrammaton but the third consonant is equal to the first, therefore it is more likely that what is written here is 'Ha Shame' meaning'The Name'. This word is a reference to God's Name without actually naming it .
